It seems iPods have become so ubiquitous that anyone worth reading about probably has one. Hence, AC introduces a look into the iPods of Austin's social elite. And who better to spotlight than
Spoon frontman and scenester nonpareil
Britt Daniel, whose silver iPod mini was a treasure trove for the indie obsessed? It took a brief moment to navigate the French menus (very cosmopolitan!) before I could switch to English menus, only to notice that the time was set to read in military time (quirky!). My attention immediately went to the playlists titled Zarbo_Megamix (seemingly after Spoon bassist
Joshua Zarbo and featuring some seriously questionable
Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam songs), Conor_Rules (
Conor Oberst of
Bright Eyes spreading the
Morrissey on thick), and postshowslowjams (only a man of Daniel's repute could boldly abut
Sade and
Teddy Pendergrass and still win my heart). More elusive were quiet_storm, Tesh4Life, and chillin_w/homies (no joke). Putting the Pod on random to get a smattering of Brittness revealed a man of varied tastes. The
Kinks,
M83, the
Beach Boys,
C+C Music Factory (a Zarbo addition, I'm sure),
Chet Baker,
Galaxie 500, Spoon. Wait ... Spoon? This brings up the age old question of "Can one have their own music on their iPod?"
Prince can listen to his music and his music only, but the Purple One Britt is not. Giving him the benefit of the doubt, let's say the inclusion of this track (from the upcoming Gimme Fiction LP) was for practical purposes and pretend this never happened. I skipped ahead to a rare Interpol remix and began nosing through the extras. As I opened the contacts menu and heard the pained whirring of a laboring hard drive, I realized why I found so few songs on the iPod: All four gigs were taken up by his contact list. I added my own info and returned it to its rightful owner.
